Description
B&B
Residence Santa Chiara is situated in the
historic centre in Lucca Tuscany.
The bed & breakfast is inside an
ancient bourgeois house, built in the second half of
the 16th century, inside of the
medieval boundary walls of Lucca's historic centre.
It is situated right in front of the
marvellous Villa Bottini park, once residence of Elisa
Bonaparte and where today, during the summer months
are taking place cultural events.
From
here it is possible to reach in a few minutes on foot
the most interesting historic attractions such as the
famous Piazza Anfiteatro,
Torre Guinigi, Piazza San
Michele and the central Via Fillungo
with elegant boutiques and antique
shops.
The train station is only 1 km away, Pisa Airport 20
km and Florence Airport 65 km. As Lucca is located in
a very central position, it is possible to make
excursions to the most important and beautiful places
in Tuscany such as Florence, Pisa,
Pistoia, Siena, San Gimignano,
the sea of the Versilia or
the Garfagnana mountains;
not to forget the magnificent villas around Lucca and
the farmsteads with olive oil and wine production of
the so called Colline Lucchesi.
Lucca's historical
centre is surrounded by a 16th century city wall.
These walls are unique in Tuscany, because one can
walk, go by bike or do jogging over a total length of
4.2 km, 12 m height and 12 m width. This is not only a
very romantic place, but the walls offer also the
opportunity to catch particular views of the centre
and the silhouette of the Apennines. During the middle
ages, Lucca was a rich trading town which is still
visible in the numerous grand palazzos, decorating the
alleys of the centre, such as Palazzo Mansi,
Palazzo Pfanner and Palazzo Guinigi.
Lucca's nobles grew holm oaks on the top of the towers.
The only remaining tower with holm oaks on the top, is Torre Guinigi, the symbol of the town.
It is worth visiting the towers like Torre Guinigi or the clock tower, the so called
Torre delle
Ore (1754 unique clock-work mechanism), because from
there, it is possible to view the characteristic red
tiled roofs of the town, as well as the numerous
churches (a reason why Lucca is also called the town
of the hundred churches).
Also worth seeing the 15th century cathedral San
Martino; inside one can admire several artistic works,
but the most important one is the sarcophagus of the
Ilaria del Caretto, work of the famous artist
Jacopo
della Quercia (1408).
Another important church is San Michele, dating back
to the 13th century with an important terracotta work
created by Andrea della Robbia or the San
Frediano church, of the same century, with an interesting
mosaic facade. Near Piazza San Michele is
the house, where the famous composer Giacomo Puccini
was born that, today has been converted into the Puccini-Museum, with many keepsakes
and the piano with which he composed Turandot.
Enjoy the breathtaking
atmosphere of this fascinating city in all its details,
taste the specialities in the restaurants and the
delicious wine of the hills around Lucca or start to
discover the picturesque Tuscany.
