Carnival in Tuscany

The most famous carnival in Tuscany is the Carnevale di Viareggio. Every year during each carnival Sunday there are thousands of visitors from all over Italy and the world who are coming to view the the carnival in the Tuscan seaside resort.

However, many Tuscan towns have introduced their own carnival. After Viareggio, the two most famous carnivals are the Carnevale di Foiano della Chiana and Carnevale di Follonica. It is said that the Carnevale di Foiano is the oldest carnival in Italy, dating back to the year 1539. Each of the 4 districts (Azzurri, Bombolo, Nottambuli and Rustici), the so called Cantieri, are challenging to build the most imaginative wagon to win the carnival’s cup. Because of the narrow roads inside of the historic center, the wagons can’t be largher than 10 m and higher than 13 m.

Similar to Viareggio is the carnival in the southern Tuscan seaside resort Follonica. Also here the districts, called here Rioni (Chiesa, Centro, Zona Nuova, Senzuno, Cassarello, 167 Ovest, Capannino, Pratoranieri) are challenging each other. The parades are starting on each carnival Sunday after lunch around 3 p.m. In order to view the procession you must pay an entrance ticket (Viareggio ca. € 18/Pers., Follonica ca. € 3/Pers., Foiano della Chiana ca. € 8/Pers.).
