The historic Spa resort “Antica Querciolaia” at Rapolano Terme near Siena in Tuscany, the Senese epic of Giuseppe Garibaldi is enriched by a new discovery. Back to the light, inside of the spa, the tub where, in August 1867, Giuseppe Garibaldi took care of the injuries he siffered during the historic battle on the Aspromonte (Calabria, Southern Italy). The travertine bathtub, was found in the mud area at that time dedicated for mud treatments, during the recent maintenance work on the thermal structure. A precious jewel that is visible to the public thanks to a special glass panel located above the old travertine structure and a spot lighting system. The tank is located under the dressing room where the hero of two worlds used to change before diving in the warm thermal waters of Rapolano.
The renovation of the pool “In the year of 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy – says the president of Terme Antica Querciolaia, Silvana Micheli – the discovery of the tub is a major discovery that sheds new light on the history of the Italian Risorgimento. A gift to the city of Rapolano Spa and throughout the province of Siena, which enhances and complete, even from the cultural point of view, the thermal structure. The discovery of the tub was an accidental discovery, made during the annual maintenance which have provided for the renovation of the floors and the renovation of the space under the dressing room. After the discovery, it was decided to create a special transparent floor that does not inhibit the view, in order to return the room to its former glory. ”
Pairing of cultural wealth and sophistication. Even Simon Bezzina, President of the Province of Siena, host of the press conference, stressed the importance of the discovery as a source of impetus for spa tourism throughout the territory of Siena: “The discovery of today and the many artistic initiatives Terme Antica Querciolaia are organizing, make of it a historical and cultural heritage, we are proud of.”
Tricolour package to celebrate Unity of Italy. The tub, located in the oldest part of the plant thus becomes part of the artistic and cultural heritage of the establishment of Rapolano Terme. “It is – says Alessandro Fabbrini Director of the Spa – more than an opportunity for our guests. We have already proposed during the weekend of March 17, the tricolour package comprising energizing massages in the dressing room from where it is possible to admire the bathtub.”
The exhibition dedicated to Garibaldi. In collaboration with the town administration will open next April 2 at the spa Antica Terme Querciolaiola, the exhibition “Summer 1867: Garibaldi at Rapolano Terme and the dream of Rome.” “The exhibition organized by Dorit Mazzini – rememberes Emiliano Spanu, mayor of Rapolano Terme – is divided into two sections. In the first, for educational purposes, through a series of prints from the private collection of the Agricultural Society Poggio Santa Cecilia SpA, has been reconstructed the history of the Italian unification: the Five Days of Milan (1848) taking possession of Porta Pia (1870). In the second section, purely local, the public will be offered in addition to the description of the living room of the baths of Ancient Querciolaia Garibaldi, also a part of life that took place during the period covered in the first section, in a small community such as Poggio Santa Cecilia, at that time the exclusive property of Pietro Leopoldo Buoninsegni, a friend of General Garibaldi. ”
The statue of Andrea Roggi, the symbol of the spa resort. The link between the romantic hero and source of healing, in fact, had already been celebrated on the occasion of the bicentenary of Garibaldi’s birth, when at the Terme Antica Querciolaia was inaugurated the statue of the artist Andrea Roggi, dedicated to the leader of the Risorgimento. “At that time – remembers the Tuscan art critic Gilbero Madioni – the Tuscan artist has dedicated to the hero the statue, located in the historic part of the Baths, which today is a symbol of ancient Querciolaia and cultural element, a source of memory for all user customers, who use the healing goodness of these miraculous waters. ” Miracle at which underwent the same Garibaldi, who in a letter to his friend said this of his stay: “The Rapolano baths have taken the rest of inconvenience to the left foot and the effect it was instantaneous, it gives me good review of the baths which I plan to continue for several days. “
