Storia
In
this area below the city was situated, since the
middle ages, one of the most important woodlands,
which was exploited to provide wood to the "urbs"
(engl. city) and to the numerous convents and
monasteries. In the early twelfth century this
location, alike many others, was linked to Volterra by
a road that descended from the city to the valley
floor up to the Cecina river passing through the
present property. The woodland, called del Ragone,
was traversed by this road named Strata vetera del
Ragone along which, since the 13th century, the
populace settled forming small settlements, villae,
or little farms most probably related to wood cutting
work and transportation of logs.
Many
remains of these settlements are still present in the
area surrounding the property. Close to Casa
dell'Olmo a small portion of this important
road is still visible and practicable. The building,
dating back to the fourteenth century, belongs to this
historic period. The northern part hosts the original
and oldest core of the house. The building was
enlarged over time, as the woodland almost disappeared
and the house passed from a woodsmen house into a farm
with animal sheds, barns, storehouses and anything
else necessary to rural life. The original buildings
were carefully restored.
