The farmstay Agriturismo Pietreto is situated a few kilometres outside the medieval hilltop village Roccastrada, about 35 km from the seaside, in Maremma Tuscany.
There are 3 single stone houses of different size for 2 up to 8 persons available, all with enchanting panoramic view over the surrounding countryside. The houses are tastefully furnished in the typical Tuscan countrystyle, each with fireplace in the living room and typical counrystyle kitchens.
Around the houses there is the typical Maremma countryside with green hills, deep valleys, covered with chestnut woods and olive groves. Particular for this area are the enormous trachyte stones that can be found inside of the estate.
In the well-kept garden there is for each house a stone oven and a barbecue, there is table tennis, archery, sitting places here and there as well as two outside swimming pools, one exclusively for Casale Fonte, whereas the other in common use for the two country houses Casale Ulisse and Casale Belvedere.
Until a few years ago, the grandparents of today's owners were collecting the chestnuts in their wood.
Part of the fruits were uses for cooking, whereas the other part was dried and grind to obtain the prescious chestnut flour.
The chestnut flour was used in this area like normal flour to make bread, cakes, biscuits and many other things. Even today, the harvest is made by hand, as only in this way the shell remains intact. The chestnut harvest is starting every year in autumn, from the beginning of October for approximately 20 days.
Guests may take part in the harvest.
Today chestnut flour is a speciality, but once, the older people called the chestnut tree the bread tree, as the were producing their bread in the area with chestnut flour and the bread that was made with the flour, was called the bread of the pour. Also the chestnut wood was very important as it is very restant and long-living, ideal for the furniture, window- and door production.
Besides the chestnut wood, the family has been cultivating for more than 200 years olive trees. Today there are 900 olive trees on the farm with which is produced an excellent extra virgin olive oil, made of the varieties Leccino, Frantoio, Pendolino and Maurino.
Around the farm there are several tracking trails to enjoy nature and animals.
The farm is situated in the plain countryside; on the one hand quite isolated, but at the same time also easily to reach, as the statal road is only a few hundred metres away and the nearest village Roccastrada just one kilometer.
It is in fact one of those typical, small medieval hilltop villages, where one might find everything for daily life, from supermarket, grocers, typical restaurants, bars, pharmacy, post office, banks etc.
The seaside with the seaside resorts Castiglione della Pescaia or Follonica as well as the hinterland with Massa Marittima, Grosseto and Siena can be reached within 30 minutes by car. All the most important places in Tuscany can be reached for day trips.
