Tuscany Accommodation Il Cerreto Tuscany Accommodation

Descri
ption

The bio-farm Il Cerreto is situated as part of the locality Montegemoli in the Province of Pisa, nestling among the so called Colline Volterrane, which are the hills around Volterra. The farm is situated just underneath Volterra, which is reachable within about 15 minutes by car. In approximately 20 Minutes, one reaches the beautiful Costa Etrusca (engl. Etruscan Coast) with places like Cecina Mare or Marina di Bibbona. Livorno is only 30 minutes by car away, Pisa 45 minutes, whereas Florence and Siena can be reached in about one hour.

The bio-farm Il Cerreto is geographically situated south from Pisa, in the northern Maremma, because of the ore-resources also called Le Colline Metallifere (engl. ore-hills), which were already exploited by the Etruscans. In the whole territory is extracted the precious alabaster stone, whose works are mainly sold at Volterra.
The core of the farm is the eighteenth century tower, around which were built later on two farmhouses. At the guest's disposal are 7 apartments, 2 two-room apartments, 3 three-room apartments and 2 four-room apartments

Five apartments are situated in the main house, built around the tower, whereas two apartments have just been restored in the former school. The double rooms have been recently restored, employing biological building techniques and are situated in the minor building, also dating back to the 18th century, where is also situated the restaurant, a lounge with TV and a spacious room where courses can be held. The restaurant offers a vegetarian cuisine, based on the farm products. It is possible to attend to cooking courses, in order to learn to prepare typical Tuscan vegetarian plates.

At the guest's disposal there is a swimming pool of about 100 square meters, which is more a bio-lake that fits harmoniously in the nature. The bio-lake is an in the flora and fauna integrated ecosystem. The water regenerates automatically as if it is the water of a river, because the same ecosystem is created. But how does the bio-lake exactly work: numerous water plants, which are on the brink of the pool, clean and filter the water, which then goes over a small waterfall into a regeneration lake. Stones, sand and zeolytes continue to filter the water, which than goes over pumps up into the pool, enriched with oxygen. Because of the total lack of chemicals or anti-algal products, during the summer season there is a very particular vitality and smell.

The farm Il Cerreto pursues biodynamic farming, based on the three principles of the Austrian scientist and anthroposoph R. Steiner (1861-1925):

1. increasing the fertility of soil
2. organizing the farm as a living being
3. the farmer as the conscience of this creature: a person who takes care of the relationship between plants and the cosmos, choosing the right moment for sowing and other activities.

To carry out this programme, biodynamic agriculture employs so-called biodynamic preparations whose purpose is to bring new vital forces into the farm and stimulate the existing ones. At il Cerreto, one can acquire again the respect for nature and a healthier way of life.

The Bio-Farm Il Cerreto produces pasta, cereals, vegetables, fodder, wine, olive oil, honey, vegetable sauces, jams, fruit juices.

Part of these products are used in the farm-restaurant or sold together with biological products from other farms in the farm-shop (bakery and milk products). The farm is controlled by the A.I.A.B. (it. abbr. Associazione Italiana Agricoltori Biologici = engl. Italian Association of Biological Farmers) and is member of the C.T.P.B. (it. abbr.Coordinamento Toscano Produttori Biologici= Tuscan Coordination of Biological Producers).
