Description
Il Ciliegio,nestling
among the gentle slopes of the Maremma, only 5 km from Sorano
in Southern Tuscany, is composed of two single houses
which are both one-storey buildings for 2 to 6 people
and 4 holiday apartments in a building about 50 m away.
Furthermore, the garden is
furnished with deck-chairs, tables and garden umbrellas, where our guests can still hear the sounds
and feel the smell of an unspoiled nature. In the
garden, lying between olive trees, there is a swimming pool of 10x5 m
size, with sun umbrella, deck chairs and small tables at the guest's
disposal.
Nearby
places like the characteristical Sovana, the pitturesque
Pitigliano, Scansano and Manciano. Although the vicinity to these
places, Il Ciliegio is only surrounded by the hilly
landscape. Every house has a large terrace with table and
chairs for outside dining or just to enjoy peaceful and
relaxing moments.
The village Sorano as well as
Pitigliano and Sovana, were built on a tufaceous
rock. The center of the village has still its original medieval
structure, where one can walk through the narrow alleys.
Sorano's first traces as a village date back to the 3rd century B.C. when the
Romans started with the conquest of Etruria. Findings
around Sorana and the villages nearby prove also a very
strong Etruscan presence.
The near
Sovana was once defined as the Queen of the
Maremma, a past witnessed by many monuments and findings. Around Sovana there are Etruscan
tombs of various types; the so called Tomba
d'Ildebranda is one of the biggest Etrurian graves.
The last town built on a tufaceous rock is Pitigliano,
known also for the delicious white wine Bianco
di Pitigiano.
Already the Etrucans, followed by the Romans, exploited for their wine
production the hills around Pitigliano. The caves digged
into the tufa and used also for wine canteens, testify the
long lasting wine culture in this area. Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are connected through the so
called Vie Cave, which are ways digged into the tufa.
Not
far away is the town Saturnia and the baths
with the sulphurous waters. According to a
legend Saturnia was founded by Saturn. It was first an
Etruscan than a Roman settlement and later on, in the
middle ages, passed to the important Tuscan
aristocratic family Aldobrandeschi.
In 1299
Saturnia was destroyed by the Sieneses. It became
nearly a ghost town, but the thermal waters underneath
Saturnia brought again economic welfare. For
wine-loving people, it is a must to visit Scansano,
famous for the rubin coloured red wine Morellino
di Scansano. The village invites with its
numerous wine-bars and restaurants to taste the specialities of the area, accompanied by the local
wine.
Driving towards the
coast we will find another fascinating place: Manciano, once called
la spia della Maremma (eng. the spy of the Maremma). Infact form the fortress it is
possible to enjoy a view over the hills and the Mount
Amiata, in front the marvellous Argentario Coast with the
Island of Giglio, until further South the town of
Orbetello. Also those who love the sea will have a good time on the
beautiful beach of Alberese, famous seaside towns like
Porto S. Stefano and Porto Ercole or the historical
Ansedonia, once called by the Romans Cosa, to name just a few. At Il
Ciligio one can pass a peaceful holiday within the
countryside and combine this with the
discovery of the characteristic Maremma.
