Description
The
farm Agriturismo Il Fondaccio is situated
in a hilly position 2 km outside of Vinci and
40 km from Florence. Within an antique building,
once used for the carts, adjoining to the owner's
house, are today 5 small holiday apartments,
whose names still remember their original purpose:
Il Coppaio, once used to place the olive oil
in big olive jars ("coppi") over months;
La Limoniaia, place where the olive trees were
kept to protect them from cold; La Carraia,
form the place where the carts were kept. On the first
floor, the former hayloft, where the fodder was stored
to get dry by the winds of this area, are placed La
Tramontana, the wind blowing from north and Il
Libeccio, called after the wind blowing from south-west.
The
farm is run by the brothers Sergio and
Roberto Falzari, who personally restored
the apartments with the help of some family members:
Sandro "the boss", because he managed the
works, Clementina "the artist", because she
took care of the furnishing and the research of
materials. Whereas Roberto, keen on restoration of
antique furniture, has taken care to find and to
restore antique pieces of Tuscan furniture
dating back to the late 18th and 19th century.
Every apartment is different to the other. They have
in common the sense of warmth and privacy as well as a
private terrace, from where it is possible to
access the garden and the swimming pool.
The
Fondaccio Farm is covering 15 ha of farmland,
of which great part is extending over the hills and
only 3 ha of cereals are in the valley. From the 50's
on, the farm has been producing wine and extra
virgin olive oil. In the 90s, the farm was
taken over by the Falzari brothers. Particularly the
older one, Sergio, a passionate of oenology and
sommelier, follows the product in all its product
phases: from the care of the vines and the harvest to
the wine-making and finally the bottling. Il Fondaccio
produces a red Chianti D.O.C.G. wine, called "Madrigale",
obtained by the traditional Tuscan vines Sangiovese,
Canaiolo and Colorino, grown on the tuffaceous
and clayey ground in front of the house.
The
white wine, the "Bianco dell'Empolese" is
obtained from the Trebbiano grape, which is
cultivated in the lower part of the vineyard. The
extra virgin olive oil is produced by the olive types
Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo,
Pendolino, Rossellino and Cerretano.
The surrounding countryside, mainly cultivated
by vines and olives, is characterized by small working
farms and rolling hills until reaching the
Montalbano. Therefore it is a very well-kept and
green landscape made of never ending rolling
hills. This beautiful and fertile landscape gave
origin to the foundation of the numerous small
villages inviting to discover the regional cuisine and
culture at the restaurants, open-air markets, village
fairs (fig festival, oil festival, truffle festival,
wine festival...).
Only
4 km away starts the Valley of the Arno River,
which from antiquity on has been nourishing the
economic structure of this region. The Arno allowed
the rise of the paper industry, glassworks (at Empoli,
10 km) and the leather industry for the manufacture of
shoes, clothes and bags, as well as the pottery art at
Montelupo Fiorentino (12 km).
From the Fondaccio farm it is possible to reach
between 30 and 45 minutes the main places of art in
Tuscany: Florence, Pisa, Lucca,
Pistoia, Montecatini, the Versilia
Coast and Livorno. In approximately one
hour by car it is possible to reach Siena,
San Gimignano and Volterra.
