Description
The
Hotel Relais Palazzo del Capitano is
situated in the heart of the historic town of
San Quirico
d'Orcia,
on of the most characteristic places in the Val
d'Orcia, south from
Siena
in the centre of Tuscany.
The building where the small hotel Palazzo
del
Capitano
resides
datees back to the 15th century and is one of
the oldest buildings within the historic centre.
During the middle ages it belonged to the Sienese noble
family Biringucci, whose coat of arms is still
over the entrance of Palazzo del Capitano.
Today the charming hotel has 11 very elegant rooms and suites,
equipped with every comfort, but maintaining the
antique Tuscan character.
In the characteristic banqueting-room,
decorated with a vaulted ceiling and a big fireplace,
once used as stables, the breakfast is served.
This
room is also ideal for banquets and any kind of celebrations
(weddings). It is also possible to make wine
tasting of the best local and Tuscan
wines, which are kept in the antique wine
cellar, which was discovered only during the
restoration works.
Part of the hotel a well-cared
park
with lavender bushes, sweet herbs, olive trees, fruit
trees, vine pergola with tables and chairs.
An oasis of peace, where the
breakfast
is served
during the summer months or where one can just relax
under the sun umbrellas, in the comfortable deckchairs.
From April 2008, the hotel has also new wellness
suites at the wellness centre La Suite di
Venere as well as a new boutique, in the main road
in the centre of the village. On the ground floor of
the wellness centre, guests can get relaxed in the
charming lounge Salone dello Zodiaco with its
comfortable sofas and armchairs, from where one can
access the wellness area La Grotta di Venere
with cromotherapy-jacuzzi, Turkish bath, showers and
wellness treatments.
The centre of S. Quirico d'Orcia is situated on
a hillock, separating the valley of the rivers Orcia
and Asso, surrounded by a still quite intact
boundary wall.
Here in this small medieval town, there are naturally lots of
narrow alleys where one can walk, framed by
antique houses with dwellings, small shops
of any type and excellent restaurants hidden
inside.
One of those restaurants is the Trattoria
Al Vecchio Forno, situated only a few metres
from Palazzo del Capitano and belonging
also to the same owners.
The trattoria is one of the
oldest restaurants in this area, where it is possible
to enjoy within a country-style like and cosy setting
the typical Tuscan cuisine with specialities that are
still conserving the antique flavours of past
times: homemade pasta like the Pici al Sugo
d'Anatra (pasta with duck tomato sauce), Pappardelle
al Sugo di Cinghiale (band-noudles with wild boar
sauce) or the main courses like Cinghiale in umido
(wild boar stew), Brasato di Capriolo (braised
roe deer) or the delicious roasted meat and to finish
various homemade desserts... all this accompanied by selected
local and Tuscan wines, between which stands
out the Brunello di Montalcino.
Moving from San Quirico d'Orcia there are many
possibilities as for the lovers of nature as
for those who are interested in history and
culture.
Driving down from San Quirico, one meets the enchanting
Bagno Vignoni, whose centre instead of a "Piazza"
has a huge basin filled with thermal water coming
from the Amiata. In the 15th century, already Saint
Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo de' Medici,
called il Magnifico took relaxing bathes. Or,
only a few kilometres away Montalcino of Etruscan
origins, but famous all over the world for the red
wine Brunello di Montalcino. From Castiglione
d'Orcia one can enjoy one of the most beautiful
views over the Val d'Orcia.
Only a few
kilometres towards
Siena
one meets Pienza,
once called Corsignano, where Pope Pio II was
born. He commissioned to Rosselino to build the ideal
town (cittą ideale). Pienza is also famous for
the sheep's milk cheese Pecorino di Pienza
which is ideal together with one of the local wines.
The Val d'Orcia offers various possibilities to
discover this marvellous landscape: on foot, on
horseback or with the mountain bike, passing maybe
along the antique Via Francigena. The staff of Palazzo
del Capitano will be always at the guest's
disposal to make the stay as pleasant as possible or
to help with useful tips.
