The town of Saturnia takes its name from Saturno, son of Urbano; as a legend tells, it should be even the first
Italic town. The first testimonies of life found in the area are dating back to the 8th century B.C. an epoch in which the Etruscans were populating the whole Maremma.
They gave Saturnia the name of
Aurinia and only the Roman's gave him today's name. Near the parish church there are still visible today the remains of the antique Roman spas.
Around Saturnia are rising several characteristic villages like
Montemerano, Manciano, the towns built on tuff stone
Sovana,
Sorano and Pitigliano (noted for the white wine
"Bianco di Pitigliano") as well as Scansano (renowned for the red wine
"Morellino di Scansano"). In about half an hour by car one can reach the marvellous
Argentario Coast with Talamone, Ansedonia, Porto Ercole and Porto S. Stefano (ferries to the Island of Giglio).
